SMART  Districts: Single Member Accountable Representation Throughout

Providing Monroe County with accountable representation

How do we get accountable representation?  The State of Florida, through the Florida Statutes, Chapter 124, enacted by the legislature, provides the electors from within a county to determine how they elect their County representatives.  There are several ways to change from At-Large to Single District.  The most obvious is the way that was done in the early 80’s.  A simple motion from the current commissioners could change the process from At-Large to Single District.    The second, and most promising, is a petition of 10% of the voters in Monroe County.  This number is close to 6,000 signatures.  Once the target number is reached, the item is placed on a next available election for the voters of Monroe County to decide.
